چکیده

Abstract Sugarcane aphids [ Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner)] have become a significant pest of grain, forage, and sweet sorghum Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in the USA recent years. However, effects sugarcane aphid damage on juice quality not been well studied. A three-year (2015–2017) field study was conducted at Tifton, GA to assess planting date (April, May, or June planting) cultivar responses (24 cultivars) sorghum. Aphid ratings were measured all three years cumulative days 2016 2017. Cumulative (ln scale) (relative marginal effect) correlated five six plantings. Stem collected maturity from seven plantings for chemical analyses, which included HPLC, fluorescence excitation-emission spectrophotometry with parallel factor analysis (EEM/PARAFAC), cyclic voltammetry (CV). negatively sugar-related traits, particularly brix total sugars. In four plantings, negative correlations ( r ≤ −0.493) between trans- aconitic acid concentration observed. Fluorescence electrochemical properties related presence polyphenols also showed damage, resistant landrace No. 5 Gambela. These secondary metabolites may play role resistance tolerance. Stability revealed that more tolerant cultivars able maintain high concentrations sugars trans -aconitic across environments.

Host Plant Specialization in the Sugarcane Aphid Melanaphis sacchari

Most aphids are highly specialized on one or two related plant species and generalist species often include sympatric populations adapted to different host plants. Our aim was to test the hypothesis of the existence of host specialized lineages of the aphid Melanaphis sacchari in Reunion Island. To this end, we investigated the genetic diversity of the aphid and its association with host plants...

Low Genetic Diversity in Melanaphis sacchari Aphid Populations at the Worldwide Scale

Numerous studies have examined the genetic diversity and genetic structure of invading species, with contrasting results concerning the relative roles of genetic diversity and phenotypic plasticity in the success of introduced populations. Increasing evidence shows that asexual lineages of aphids are able to occupy a wide geographical and ecological range of habitats despite low genetic diversi...

Categorizing sugarcane cultivar resistance to the sugarcane aphid and yellow sugarcane aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in Louisiana is colonized by two aphid species, the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner), and the yellow sugarcane aphid, Sipha flava (Forbes) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The main problem associated with M. sacchari is transmission of sugarcane yellow leaf virus, a casual agent of yellow leaf disease whose absence has been added to certification standards for m...

Sugarcane Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae): A New Pest on Sorghum in North America

In 2013, the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a new invasive pest of sorghum species in North America, was confirmed on sorghum in 4 states and 38 counties in the United States. In 2015, the aphid was reported on sorghum in 17 states and over 400 counties as well as all sorghum-producing regions in Mexico. Ability to overwinter on living annual and perenni...

NDVI to Detect Sugarcane Aphid Injury to Grain Sorghum.

Multispectral remote sensing has potential to provide quick and inexpensive information on sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner), pest status in sorghum fields. We describe a study conducted to determine if injury caused by sugarcane aphid to sorghum plants in fields of grain sorghum could be detected using multispectral remote sensing from a fixed wing aircraft. A study was conducted...
