<i>We are what we tell</i>: an enquiry into NGOs' organizational identity and accountability

Purpose This study offers a critical inquiry into accountability vis-à-vis organizational identity formation. It investigates how evolves in the transformation of an NGO operating field migration management from informal grassroots group fully-fledged organization. Design/methodology/approach The paper is outcome participatory action research project on Welcome Refugees (WR), UK-based NGO. involved documentary analysis, focus and semi-structured interviews, notes, participant observation. analysis draws poststructuralist theorization to explain interplay between different forms over time. Findings shows became salient time were experienced differently by members, thus leading competing collective narratives. Organizational members felt accountable beneficiaries ways, this was reflected their identification with Some advocated rights-based approach that partially resonated demands external donors, while others aimed at enacting feelings preserving closeness using need-based approach. These differences led struggle ultimately solved through silencing marginalized narratives adoption adaptive regime accountability. Practical implications findings case are practical relevance quasi-organizations form maintain first years operation. Their survival depends not only ability accommodate and/or resist multiplicity but also develop shared common understanding Originality/value problematizes rather than takes for granted process which organizations acquire viable role within them.
