چکیده

This paper examines how workers’ earnings change after involuntary job separations depending on the acquired IT skills and specificity of their occupational training. We categorize skill bundles along two independent dimensions. First, we distinguish between that are more specific or less compared to needed in overall labor market. Second, as digitalization becomes ever important, contain different types skills, generic expert skills. expect separations, these can have opposing effects, either reducing amplifying losses workers with bundles. find clearly results for occupations—but not general occupations: Having is positively correlated whereas negatively correlated.

The Cyclicality of Hires, Separations, and Job-to-Job Transitions

counted as unemployed. I show that an increase in the job-finding rate or an increase in the separation rate raises the job-to-job transition rate. Therefore, when I feed the measured time series for the job-finding and separation rates into this simple model, I predict that the job-to-job transition rate should be procyclical (Figure 4). This is quantitatively consistent with two direct measur...

Occupational Mobility, Occupation Distance and Basic Skills: Evidence from Job-Based Skill Measures

In this paper a basic skill vector characterization of occupations is used to examine the relation between human capital specificity and occupational mobility. Specifically, the paper asks, how much occupational mobility is simply moving a given skill or task set around different occupations that use the same skill set, and how much involves major shifts in the skill vectors? The loss of specif...

Job Separations , Heterogeneity , and Earnings Inequality

Changes in the fraction of workers experiencing job separations can account for most of the increase in earnings dispersion that occurred both between, as well as within educational groups in the United States from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Working Effort and Endogenous Job Separations in Search Equilibrium

This paper considers job separations in a search model with labour market matching and moral hazard. Both workers and firms value productive matches and take actions to increase match stability: firms offer a share of match surplus to provide workers with correct incentives and workers take hidden actions (effort) negatively affecting the match separation rate. Heterogeneous productivity draws ...
