Isothermal Deep Ocean Compressed Air Energy Storage: An Affordable Solution for Seasonal Energy Storage

There is a significant energy transition in progress globally. This mainly driven by the insertion of variable sources energy, such as wind and solar power. To guarantee that supply meets its demand, storage technologies will play an important role integrating these intermittent sources. Daily can be provided batteries. However, there still no technology provide weekly, monthly seasonal services where pumped hydro not viable solution. Herein, we introduce innovative proposal based on isothermal air compression/decompression compressed deep sea. Isothermal ocean (IDO-CAES) estimated to cost from 1500 3000 USD/kW for installed capacity 1 10 USD/kWh storage. IDO-CAES should complement batteries, providing cycles future sustainable grids, particularly coastal areas, islands offshore floating power plants, well deep-sea mining activities.
