Isolation and Characterization of Streptococcus mutans Phage as a Possible Treatment Agent for Caries
نویسندگان
چکیده
Streptococcus mutans is a key bacterium in dental caries, one of the most prevalent chronic infectious diseases. Conventional treatment fails to specifically target pathogenic bacteria, while tending eradicate commensal bacteria. Thus, caries remains common and challenging Phage therapy, which involves use bacterial viruses as anti-bacterial agents, has been gaining interest worldwide. Nevertheless, date, only few phages have isolated against S. mutans. In this study, we describe isolation characterization new phage, termed SMHBZ8, from hundreds human saliva samples that were collected, filtered, screened. The SMHBZ8 genome was sequenced analyzed, visualized by TEM, its antibacterial properties evaluated various states. addition, tested lytic efficacy cariogenic dentin model. may be first step towards developing potential phage therapy for caries.

The adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the host surface is an essential step in the development of numerous infections, including dental caries. Attachment of Streptococcus mutans, the main etiological agent of human dental caries, to the tooth surface may be mediated by glucan synthesized by glucosyltransferase (GTF) and by cell surface proteins, such as P1, which bind to salivary receptors. F...

Dental caries and dental plaque are among the most common diseases worldwide, and are caused by a mixture of microorganisms and food debris. Specific types of acid-producing bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans, colonize the dental surface and cause damage to the hard tooth structure in the presence of fermentable carbohydrates e.g., sucrose and fructose. This paper reviews the link betwee...
متن کاملSalivary Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli Levels as Indicators of Dental Caries Development in Iranian Patients with Systemic Sclerosis
Background and Objective: Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder with orofacial manifestations, including tooth decay. Lactobacilli can inhibit biofilm formation and growth of cariogenic pathogens, such as Streptococcus mutans. We aimed to assess the salivary levels of S. mutans and Lactobacilli as indicators of dental caries development in patients with systemic sclerosis. Methods: In t...
