Is There an Outward Propagating Diurnal Signal in the Precipitation of Tropical Cyclones?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Diurnal pulse (outward propagating signal) is a prominent feature in tropical cyclones (TCs) and closely related to TC structure intensity. It elusive whether the diurnal deep convectively coupled what influence on (daily) mean structure. This study addresses these outstanding problems using long-term satellite precipitation, infrared, microwave data. of precipitation occurs ∼50% days, frequency increases with The cold clouds, microwave-based convection active pulses show significant outward-propagating or phase-delaying features, indicating convective coupling pulsing events. Nearly half have cloud coupled, but reduced (20%–30%) at later stage (12–15 hr) long-duration pulses. Daily top height, ice scattering are markedly enhanced TCs pulse, compared without pulse.

The Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation in Tropical Cyclones

Position and intensity data from the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) are combined with global, gridded precipitation estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)Multisatellite PrecipitationAnalysis (TMPA) for the period 1998–2013 to study the diurnal cycle of precipitation in tropical cyclones. The comprehensive global coverage and large sampl...

The Role of Tropical Cyclones in Precipitation Over the Tropical and Subtropical North America

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are essential elements of the hydrological cycle in tropical and subtropical regions. In the present study, the contribution of TCs to seasonal precipitation around the tropical and subtropical North America is examined. When TC activity over the tropical eastern Pacific (TEP) or the Intra Americas Seas (IAS) is below (abovenormal), regional precipitation may be below (a...

Diurnal cycle of tropical precipitation in a general circulation model

[1] Hourly averaged precipitation rates from an ensemble of the Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3) simulations for the 44-month period from January 1998 through August 2001 are compared to observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. In order to have adequate sampling by the satellite, comparisons are made for 15 longitude 10 latitude boxes and for larger ge...

Clouds in Tropical Cyclones

Clouds within the inner regions of tropical cyclones are unlike those anywhere else in the atmosphere. Convective clouds contributing to cyclogenesis have rotational and deep intense updrafts but tend to have relatively weak downdrafts. Within the eyes of mature tropical cyclones, stratus clouds top a boundary layer capped by subsidence. An outward-sloping eyewall cloud is controlled by adjustm...

The Dynamics of Tropical Cyclones

The specific objectives of the current effort are: 1. To continue our study of the dynamical processes in tropical cyclones responsible for looping or erratic motion; 2. To continue the development of methods for (a) the introduction of synthetic tropical-cyclone-scale vortices in operational forecast models and (b) ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclones; 3. To continue a sensitivity study o...
