Is the US 3PL industry overcoming paradoxes amid the pandemic?

Purpose Third-party logistics (3PL) companies have experienced an explosion of volume during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Special tiers been introduced to provide differentiated levels service the customers. However, such changes in organization reveal and intensify tensions known as paradoxes. The purpose this research is identify what paradoxes emerged or become more salient specifically due COVID-19 3PLs' ground operations how they are dealt with by operation managers. Design/methodology/approach This a qualitative study conducted two phases. Phase one utilizes questionnaire approach within 3PLs operating USA. two, six months after phase one, follows in-depth one-on-one interview approach. NVivo 12 employed analyze data. Findings results show that new did fact emerge mostly related performing paradox category. from interviews 3PL managers focus on keeping safety priority manage paradoxes, along modifying operational plans, improving communication, investing training, optimizing hub network, introducing modified/new methods adapting modified human resource policies. Originality/value paper among first provides insights into these at mid-management level. foundations for development theoretical framework handling 3PLs.
