Is the modern-day dieback of yellow-cedar unprecedented?

چکیده
In Southeast Alaska, many stands of yellow-cedar (Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Oerst. ex D.P. Little; hereinafter “YC”) contain numerous standing, dead snags. Snag-age estimates based on tree morphology have been used to support the interpretation that a warming climate after ca. 1880 has triggered unprecedented YC dieback. Here, we present new snag longevity by cross-dating 61 snags with morphologies suggest they stood for extended periods. All but four these lost their outermost rings decay, so estimate when died using method wood-ablation rates measured in six living trees display partial cambial The results indicate ∼59% branches decay (Class 5 snags) remained standing >200 years, and some as long 450 years (snag mean ± SD: 233 92 years). These findings, along supporting evidence from historical photos, dendrochronology, snag-morphology surveys published literature episodes dieback also occurred before significant anthropogenic began. roles played change earlier events remain be further explored.

The uniqueness of the current, global mass invasion by nonindigenous species has been challenged recently by researchers who argue that modern rates and consequences of nonindigenous species establishment are comparable to episodes in the geological past. Although there is a fossil record of species invasions occurring in waves after geographic barriers had been lifted, such episodic events dif...

Pervasive forest mortality is expected to increase in future decades as a result of increasing temperatures. Climate-induced forest dieback can have consequences on ecosystem services, potentially mediated by changes in forest structure and understory community composition that emerge in response to tree death. Although many dieback events around the world have been documented in recent years, ...

متن کاملModern literary interpretation in understanding the meaning of the verse ‘There is nothing like Him’
Numerous views have been expressed by commentators and writers about the literary aspect and the meaning of the Qurchr('39')anic phrase "There is nothing like Him". The sequence of the words "ka" and "like" in the holy verse, has led to two literary and semantic illusions. The literary illusion is that "ka" seems to be redundant and the semantic illusion is the word ‘like’ indirectly proves the...
