Investigations on the potential of optical coherence tomography as an imaging tool for eustachian tube

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility eustachian tube optical coherence tomography (ET-OCT) for imaging pharyngeal region (ET). Ten subjects with ear complaints underwent ET-OCT guided by nasal endoscopy, and examination performed on both sides each subject's ETs. process resulting images were analysed. ranging from 21 73 years old (45 ± 14.77) enrolled in study. Eighteen examinations completed. mean duration 2.80 1.62 min (ranging 2 7 min). There no adverse events or complications. In some subjects, clearly presented microstructures ET wall, including lumen, mucosa, submucosa, cartilage plica. However, it showed different characteristics, such as an unclear hierarchy secretions lumen. may help distinguish structural composition elucidate related pathophysiological mechanisms. It is a valuable tool suited ET, potential diagnostic value determining morphology intraluminal mucosa submucosal tissue ET.
