Investigation of pile penetration in calcareous soft rock using X-ray computed tomography

چکیده
Penetration of open- and closed-ended model piles into intact chalk, a soft calcareous rock, was investigated using microfocus X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Three-dimensional images the specimens showed that crushed densified chalk in their path, creating annulus around shaft, region compressed destructured below tip, fractures across cemented regions specimen. Laser-diffraction particle-size analyses after exhumation limited difference with laboratory-remoulded which suggested thorough de-cementation. Installation stresses XCT-derived densities were paired simplified cylindrical cavity expansion solution to estimate effective radial stress–void ratio states at pile tip during penetration. More complex numerical solutions could not be applied available data. This approach posed significant problems, as it suitably incorporate hardening non-linear stiffness behaviours penetration, nor account for creation discontinuities. However, estimates found converge reconstituted critical state line material high low void ratios. partially supported use framework characterise penetration proposed recent literature.

X-ray computed tomography (CT), introduced into clinical practice in 1972, was the first of the modern slice-imaging modalities. To reconstruct images mathematically from measured data and to display and to archive them in digital form was a novelty then and is commonplace today. CT has shown a steady upward trend with respect to technology, performance and clinical use independent of predictio...
متن کاملAn iterative method to estimate x-ray attenuation coefficients in computed tomography
Introduction: The basis of image formation in Computed Tomography (CT) lies in the x-ray linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material. Compton scattering and photoelectric effect are the dominant interactions of the x-ray photons with the subject, in the range of diagnostic radiology. These two coefficients are important in tissue characterization by Dual-Energy CT (D...

In previous work we have described and validated robust techniques for partitioning the pore space of a porous material into simple regions, thereby allowing it to be represented by a network of simple building blocks. The primary purpose of this analysis is the generation of a pore-throat network for modelling immiscible multi-phase fluid displacements. However, combining our partitioning algo...
متن کاملAssessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method
Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

Micro-computed tomography (μCT) has been successfully used to study the cardiovascular system of mouse embryos in situ. With the use of barium as a suitablecontrast agent, blood vessels have beenimaged and analysed quantitatively such asblood volume and vessel sizes on embryosof ages 14.5 to 16.5 days old. The advantageof using this imaging modality is that it hasprovide...
