Investigating factors that set the lower elevational limit of Canada jays (Perisoreus canadensis) on Vancouver Island

چکیده
The biotic and abiotic factors responsible for determining ranges of most species are poorly understood. Canada jay (Perisoreus canadensis Linnaeus, 1766) relies on perishable cached food over-winter survival late-winter breeding the persistence could be a driver range limits. We confirmed that jay’s lower elevational limit Vancouver Island, British Columbia, matches subalpine zone (900 m) then conducted simulated caching experiments to examine influence antimicrobial properties tree (biotic) temperature (abiotic) preservation food. found two high-elevation species, Yellow cedar (Callitropsis nootkatensis D. Don, D.P. Little) Amabilis fir (Abies amabilis Douglas ex J. Forbes) preserved blueberries chicken flesh better than other trees but they also occurred well below jays. effect was similarly unclear; while at 1150 m retained 17 % more mass 550 m, there no difference in percent remaining placed 70 above, versus 120 below, Jay limit. Thus we were unable provide definitive evidence either proposed or setting resident

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Colonists of even the most inhospitable environments, lichens are present in all terrestrial ecosystems. Because of their ecological versatility and ubiquity, they have been considered excellent candidates for early colonizers of terrestrial environments. Despite such predictions, good preservation potential, and the extant diversity of lichenized fungi, the fossil record o...

This report is part of an ongoing project, begun in IYX7, drain the district. Most of the coalfield is covered by till which limits exposures to the showline, rivers and roadcuts. Quantifying the degree to which natural or protected areas are representative of a specified baseline provides critical information to conservation prioritization schemes. We report results on southeastern Vancouver Island, Canada, where we compared environmental conditions represented across the entire landscape, in oak savanna habitats prior to European settlement (<1850), and in both protect...
متن کاملDemographic effects on fruit set in the dioecious shrub Canada buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis)
The effects of pollen limitation on reproductive success in plants have been well-documented using pollen supplementation experiments. However, the role of local demographics in determining pollen limitation, particularly in terms of the additive and interactive effects of pollen availability and competition are not well known. We measured fruit set in the dioecious shrub Canada buffaloberry (S...
