Inversion of Geothermal Heat Flux under the Ice Sheet of Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica

چکیده
Antarctic geothermal heat flux is a basic input variable for ice sheet dynamics simulation. It greatly affects the temperature and mechanical properties at bottom of sheet, influencing sliding, melting, internal deformation. Due to fact that Antarctica covered by thick direct measurements are very limited. This study was carried out estimate regional in continent through geophysical inversion. Princess Elizabeth Land, East one areas which we have weak understanding flux. Through latest airborne geomagnetic data, inverted Curie depth, obtaining bedrock based on one-dimensional steady-state conduction equation. The results indicated depth Land shallower than previously estimated, consequently higher. Thus, contribution subglacial melting likely greater expected this region. further provides research clues formation developed water system Land.

Climatic variability in Princess Elizabeth Land (East Antarctica) over the last 350 years
We use isotopic composition (δD) data from six sites in Princess Elizabeth Land (PEL) in order to reconstruct air temperature variability in this sector of East Antarctica over the last 350 years. First, we use the present-day instrumental mean annual surface air temperature data to demonstrate that the studied region (between Russia’s Progress, Vostok and Mirny research stations) is characteri...
متن کاملPlankton diversity and aquatic ecology of a freshwater lake (L3) at Bharti Island, Larsemann Hills, east Antarctica
The Larsemann Hills range is an ice-free oasis on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, which includes Bharti Island, Fisher Island, McLeod Island, Broknes Peninsula, Stornes Peninsula, and several other islands, promontories, and nunataks. The Larsemann Hills is an ice-free area of approximately 50 km2, located halfway between the Vestfold Hills a...
متن کاملHigh geothermal heat flux measured below the West Antarctic Ice Sheet
The geothermal heat flux is a critical thermal boundary condition that influences the melting, flow, and mass balance of ice sheets, but measurements of this parameter are difficult to make in ice-covered regions. We report the first direct measurement of geothermal heat flux into the base of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), below Subglacial Lake Whillans, determined from the thermal gradie...
متن کاملSensitivity of Cenozoic Antarctic ice sheet variations to geothermal heat flux
The sensitivity of long-term Cenozoic variations of the East Antarctic ice sheet to geothermal heat flux is investigated, using a coupled climate–ice sheet model with various prescribed values and patterns of geothermal heat flux. The sudden growth of major ice across the Eocene–Oligocene boundary (~34 Ma) is used as a test bed for this sensitivity. A suite of several million year-long simulati...
متن کاملPan–ice-sheet glacier terminus change in East Antarctica reveals sensitivity of Wilkes Land to sea-ice changes
The dynamics of ocean-terminating outlet glaciers are an important component of ice-sheet mass balance. Using satellite imagery for the past 40 years, we compile an approximately decadal record of outlet-glacier terminus position change around the entire East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) marine margin. We find that most outlet glaciers retreated during the period 1974-1990, before switching to ad...
