Inventory Management Practices in Private Healthcare Facilities in Nairobi County

Universal health coverage (UHC) is an integral part of the United Nations sustainable development goals. The private sector plays a prominent role in achieving UHC, being primary source essential medicines for many people. However, healthcare facilities low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have insufficient stocks medicines. Simultaneously, these same carry excessive quantities other drugs, leading to obsolescence. This suggests poor inventory control. To propose potential remedies it vital fully understand underlying causes. In semi-structured interviews with managers Nairobi, we asked them about their (1) control systems, (2) skills, (3) time/human resource constraints, (4) budget (5) motivations control, (6) suppliers. Our results suggest that problems are driven by limitations (budget resources), managerial issues (relating skills systems), market mechanisms limit overage underage costs. Unavailability at supplier level relatively minor issues. We posit key causes interlinked stem from wider regulatory environment. challenge prevalent beliefs medicine supply chains LMICs lead novel hypotheses. Testing hypotheses could improve our understanding management aid progress UHC.
