چکیده
Abstract Since Machery et al. Cognition 92, B1-B12 (2004) attacked Kripke’s refutation of classical descriptivism, their experiment has been repeated several times, in its original version or some revised ones, by theorists with contrasting intents. Some the for confirming results, others proving them unreliable. One striking characteristic those surveys is that they mostly replicated data collected al.’s B1-B12, 2004 experiment: less than 60% Westerners showed preference causal-historical response. We side critics experiment. In this paper, we present results a survey tests hypotheses explaining percentage Westerners’ preferences without taking it as evidence more 40% have descriptivist intuitions on semantic reference. Saving the intuitions: polylithic reference
My main aim in this paper is to clarify the concepts of referential success and of referential continuity that are so crucial to the scientific realism debate. I start by considering the three dominant theories of reference and the intuitions that motivate each of them. Since several intuitions cited in support of one theory conflict with intuitions cited in support of another something has to ...

متن کاملManaging Co-reference on the Semantic Web
Co-reference resolution, or the determination of ‘equivalent’ URIs referring to the same concept or entity, is a significant hurdle to overcome in the realisation of large scale Semantic Web applications. However, it has only recently gained the attention of research communities in the Semantic Web context, and while activities are now underway in identifying co-referent or conflated URIs, litt...
متن کاملSemantic reference systems
Four centuries after René Descartes watched a fly walk across his ceiling and wondered how to capture its position (Gribbin 2002), we use Cartesian coordinates routinely to describe locations. We identify the positions of entities in the real world, transform their GIS representations from one coordinate system to another, and integrate spatially referenced data across multiple coordinate syste...
متن کاملFolk Intuitions on Free Will*
This paper relies on experimental methods to explore the psychological underpinnings of folk intuitions about free will and responsibility. In different conditions, people give conflicting responses about agency and responsibility. In some contexts, people treat agency as indeterminist; in other contexts, they treat agency as determinist. Furthermore, in some contexts people treat responsibilit...
