Intrusion into Granular Media Beyond the Quasistatic Regime

نویسندگان

چکیده

The drag force exerted on an object intruding into granular media can depend the object's velocity as well depth penetrated. We report intrusion experiments at constant speed over four orders in magnitude together with systematic molecular dynamics simulations beyond quasi-static regime. find that dependence crosses to a characteristic time after initial impact. This crossover scale, which depends penetration speed, depth, gravity and intruder geometry, challenges current models assume additive contributions drag.

Cloaking using complementary media in the quasistatic regime

Cloaking using complementary media was suggested by Lai et al. in [8]. The study of this problem faces two difficulties. Firstly, this problem is unstable since the equations describing the phenomenon have sign changing coefficients, hence the ellipticity is lost. Secondly, the localized resonance, i.e., the field explodes in some regions and remains bounded in some others, might appear. In thi...

Annular shear of cohesionless granular materials: from the inertial to quasistatic regime.

Using discrete simulations, we investigate the behavior of a model granular material within an annular shear cell. Specifically, two-dimensional assemblies of disks are placed between two circular walls, the inner one rotating with prescribed angular velocity, while the outer one may expand or shrink and maintains a constant radial pressure. Focusing on steady state flows, we delineate in param...

Sensitivity of foot intrusion kinematics during walking on granular media

Many legged organisms and robots must contend with walking across granular media (GM), substrates whose properties depend on compaction and disturbance history. Movement over GM can be particularly challenging because the ground may yield to an intruder, displaying both solid and fluid-like behavior [1]. This yielding behavior can lead to the locomotor performance of an animal or device being h...

Cloaking via anomalous localized resonance for doubly complementary media in the quasistatic regime

This paper is devoted to the study of cloaking via anomalous localized resonance (CALR) in the twoand three-dimensional quasistatic regimes. CALR associated with negative index materials was discovered by Milton and Nicorovici [21] for constant plasmonic structures in the two-dimensional quasistatic regime. Two key features of this phenomenon are the localized resonance, i.e., the fields blow u...

How granular materials deform in quasistatic conditions

Based on numerical simulations of quasistatic deformation of model granular materials, two rheological regimes are distinguished, according to whether macroscopic strains merely reflect microscopic material strains within the grains in their contact regions (type I strains), or result from instabilities and contact network rearrangements at the microscopic level (type II strains). We discuss th...
