Introduction: Tracing Entanglements in the Seventeenth Century Caribbean

Abstract This introductory theoretical chapter makes the case for reading seventeenth-century French travel writing to Caribbean in situ. Using Édouard Glissant’s notion of point entanglement, it argues a shift perspectives that would seek undo colonial bias early modern texts and other entangled ramifications literature. In so doing, book brings attention ways which enslaved Indigenous peoples actively contributed shaping society and, indeed, representations it. The first section discusses discourses silencing around coloniality period presents points departures have been guiding work. following is devoted more thorough discussion baroque how this uses as an operative concept read through entanglements writing. third gives contextual framing analysis. It sketches history narratives describe population islands. Finally, fourth offers detailed account travelogues, their writers predicaments dictated these texts, ends by outlining chapters or entanglement will be approached, namely geography, self, language.
