Introduced populations of the garden lupine are adapted to local generalist snails but have lost alkaloid diversity

چکیده
Abstract Intraspecific variation in growth and defence among plant populations can be driven by differences (a)biotic conditions, such as herbivory resources. Introduction of species to novel environments affects simultaneously encountered a resource availability both directly via altered competitive environment. Here, we address the question how (leaf mass per area (LMA), size) resistance traits alkaloids, leaf trichomes, generalist snail) vary covary between native introduced garden lupine, Lupinus polyphyllus . We focused specifically on evolved measuring from plants grown seed common Plants were more resistant against snail, Arianta arbustorum, they had trichomes higher LMA than populations. The composition alkaloids differed populations, with having diversity them. Resistance was positively associated size across all Other trait associations areas, implying that certain trade-offs may fundamentally different Our results suggest that, for loss herbivores alterations have led lower facilitate evolution optima without compensatory trade-offs. Such phytochemical similarity provides insights into mechanisms promoting successful invasions.

Co-extinctions should be regarded as fundamental co-evolutionary events promoting species turnover, prior than a consequence of human induced biodiversity loss. Focusing on current scenarios is key to biodiversity conservation, but predicting future trends could be harder and less fruitful than trying to get a better grasp on the past.
متن کاملGenetic diversity in introduced populations with an Allee effect.
A phenomenon that strongly influences the demography of small introduced populations and thereby potentially their genetic diversity is the demographic Allee effect, a reduction in population growth rates at small population sizes. We take a stochastic modeling approach to investigate levels of genetic diversity in populations that successfully overcame either a strong Allee effect, in which po...
متن کاملCommon garden comparisons of native and introduced plant populations: latitudinal clines can obscure evolutionary inferences
Common garden studies are increasingly used to identify differences in phenotypic traits between native and introduced genotypes, often ignoring sources of among-population variation within each range. We re-analyzed data from 32 common garden studies of 28 plant species that tested for rapid evolution associated with biological invasion. Our goals were: (i) to identify patterns of phenotypic t...
