Intrinsically weak magnetic anisotropy of cerium in potential hard-magnetic intermetallics

Cerium-based intermetallics are currently attracting much interest as a possible alternative to existing high-performance magnets containing scarce heavy rare-earth elements. However, the intrinsic magnetic properties of Ce in these systems poorly understood due difficulty quantitative description Kondo effect, many-body phenomenon where conduction electrons screen out Ce-4f moment. Here, we show that shell Ce-Fe is partially screened. The scale dramatically enhanced by nitrogen interstitials completely suppressing contribution anisotropy, striking contrast effect nitrogenation isostructural other We determine full temperature dependence single-ion anisotropy and even unscreened moments contribute little room-temperature hardness. Our study thus establishes fundamental constraints on potential cerium-based permanent magnet intermetallics.
