Intraseasonal Sea Level Variability in the Persian Gulf

چکیده
Abstract Satellite observations are used to establish the dominant magnitudes, scales, and mechanisms of intraseasonal variability in ocean dynamic sea level ( ? ) Persian Gulf over 2002–15. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis applied altimetry data reveals a basinwide, single-signed fluctuation that contributes importantly variance at monthly decadal time scales. An EOF Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) same period returns similar large-scale mode variability, suggesting basinwide variation has predominantly barotropic nature. A linear theory is developed interpret data. The represents average terms local freshwater flux, barometric pressure, wind stress forcing, as well boundary Oman. tested using multiple regression with these stress, quantities input output. explains 70% ± 9% (95% confidence interval) variance. Numerical values coefficients computed empirically from consistent theoretical expectations first principles. Results point substantial nonisostatic response surface loading. Oman condition shows lagged correlation upstream along Indian subcontinent, Maritime Continent, equatorial Ocean, Ocean influence on mediated by coastal waves hinting potential predictability. This study highlights value GRACE for understanding an understudied marginal sea.

Decadal change in intraseasonal variability over the South China Sea
[1] Evidence is presented to reveal a decadal change around mid-1990s in the behavior of intraseasonal variability (ISV) over the South China Sea (SCS). During 1979–1993, the ISV has a spectral peak around 64 days, which is longer than in the recent epoch of 1994–2007 (around 42 days). The ISV event in 1979–1993 involves a merging process of the northward and westward propagating convection ano...
متن کاملLeast Squares Techniques for Extracting Water Level Fluctuations in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
Extracting the main cyclic fluctuations from sea level changes of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea is vital for understanding the behavior of tides and isolating non-tidal impacts such as those related to climate and changes in the ocean-sea circulations. This study compares two spectral analysis methods including: Least Squares Spectral Analysis (LSSA) and Least Squares Harmonic Estimation (LSHE)...
متن کاملDynamics of Intraseasonal Sea Level and Thermocline Variability in the Equatorial Atlantic during 2002–03
Satellite and in situ observations in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean during 2002–03 show dominant spectral peaks at 40–60 days and secondary peaks at 10–40 days in sea level and thermocline within the intraseasonal period band (10–80 days). A detailed investigation of the dynamics of the intraseasonal variations is carried out using an ocean general circulation model, namely, the Hybrid Coordina...
متن کاملsea level mean monthly variations in the persian gulf, oman sea and the north of the arabian sea, in 1994
sea level variations in the persian gulf, the oman sea and the north of the arabian sea have been investigated. for this purpose, 365 daily satellite images provided by the topex/poseidon (t/p) and jason-1 satellites were processed. programming in matlab software environment was also carried out for some parts of image processing. the results of this research reveal that water level fluctuation...

I read with much interest the article on the above subject by Captains Barber and Doyle in the March number of the Gazette. I was particularly interested in their remarks regarding the value of the first field dressing and the occurrence of tetanus in Arab and Turkish wounded prisoners. It may perhaps not be without interest to relate my small personal experience in regard to the above in anoth...
