Intestinal Protothecosis in a Young Bengal Cat

Background: Intestinal protothecosis is an uncommon and insidious mycotic disease. Only one human case a few rare cases in dogs have been reported. To the authors’ knowledge, intestinal protothecosis has never reported cats. Case description: This paper describes a of intestinal nine-month-old male, Bengal cat. The cat presented because onset of haemorrhagic diarrhoea. Investigations allowed diagnosis protothecosis, confirmed by PCR test on faeces. Treatment with itraconazole did not improve the clinical signs. nystatin was prescribed caused improvement signs decreased number pathogens seen on faecal cytology. faecal samples negative two months after treatment, with complete resolution symptoms. Conclusion: Infection Prototheca should be part list differential diagnoses for diarrhoea effective treating the infection this case; drug considered as first-line treatment cats well dogs, which appears to poor prognosis. Although is not zoonotic disease, cases algal infections companion animals might indicators environmental risks humans.
