Phenotype and genotype of Escherichia coli isolated from pigs with postweaning diarrhea in Hungary.
A total of 205 Escherichia coli isolates from 88 diarrheal weanling (4- to 10-week-old) pigs from 59 farms were tested by slide agglutination for K88, K99, F41, and 987P antigens. K88 antigen was detected in 61% of the isolates representing 60% of the pigs and 56% of the farms. K88 antigen was associated with serogroup O149 and 91% of the K88+ isolates. K99, F41, and 987P were not detected. Of ...
متن کاملα1,2-Fucosyllactose Does Not Improve Intestinal Function or Prevent Escherichia coli F18 Diarrhea in Newborn Pigs.
OBJECTIVES Infectious diarrhea, a leading cause of morbidity and deaths, is less prevalent in breastfed infants compared with infants fed infant formula. The dominant human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), α-1,2-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), has structural homology to bacterial adhesion sites in the intestine and may in part explain the protective effects of human milk. We hypothesized that 2'-FL prevents...
متن کاملEnterotoxigenic Escherichia coli: traveler's diarrhea comes home.
The article in this issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases by Beatty et al. [1] on an outbreak of diarrhea due to enterotoxi-genic Escherichia coli (ETEC) further documents the emergence of ETEC as a significant diarrheal pathogen in the United States. The main contribution of the article by Beatty and colleagues is that it describes one of the largest foodborne outbreaks ever reported in the Un...
متن کاملEscherichia coli in postweaning diarrhea in pigs: an update on bacterial types, pathogenesis, and prevention strategies.
Escherichia coli is one of the most important causes of postweaning diarrhea in pigs. This diarrhea is responsible for economic losses due to mortality, morbidity, decreased growth rate, and cost of medication. The E. coli causing postweaning diarrhea mostly carry the F4 (K88) or the F18 adhesin. Recently, an increase in incidence of outbreaks of severe E. coli-associated diarrhea has been obse...
متن کاملIDENTIFICATION OF THE astA GENE IN ENTEROTOXIGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI STRAINS RESPONSIBLE FOR DIARRHEA IN PIGS
The astA gene responsible for production of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli heatstable enterotoxin 1 (EAST1) was identified in E. coli strains isolated from pigs with postweaning diarrhea. Two hundred and twenty-six isolates were tested using PCR for the astA marker as well as for heat-labile I (LTI), heat-stable I (STI), and heat-stable II (STII) enterotoxin genes characteristic for enterot...
