Studies on intestinal absorption of amino acids and a dipeptide in a case of Hartnup disease.
A severely affected case of Hartnup disease is reported, where the patient responded rapidly to nicotinamide. This supports the view that all the clinical features, except reduced stature from general nutritional defect, are secondary to tryptophan and nicotinamide deficiency rather than to an unknown toxic factor. Severe malabsorption of both tryptophan and phenylalanine was demonstrated. The ...

1. Studies have been made of jejunal absorption rates in vivo in the rat of the stereoisomers of alanylphenylalanine, leucyl-leucine and glycyltryptophan. Absorption rates of L-alanyl-L-phenylalanine were about 200 times those of D-alanyl-D-phenylalanine, L-leucyl-L-leucine about 24 times those of the DD-isomer, and glycyl-L-tryptophan 5 times those of glycyl-D-tryptophan. The mixed DLand LD-is...

A 30 cm segment of the duodenum, jejunum, or ileum of normal human volunteers was perfused, on separate occasions, with test solutions containing either glycylglycine, free glycine, glycylleucine, or equimolar amounts of free glycine and free leucine. Luminal fluid contained no hydrolytic activity against glycylglycine and minimal activity against glycylleucine. In each intestinal segment, amin...
متن کاملClinical and biochemical observations in two cases of hartnup disease.
Hartnup disease, first described by Baron, Dent, Harris, Hart, and Jepson (1956), is characterized by a photosensitive pellagra-like rash, cerebellar ataxia, generalized renal aminoaciduria, hyperindoluria, and hypertryptophanuria. Nemeth and Nachmias (1958) suggested that in this disorder there might be a deficiency of tryptophan pyrrolase, the enzyme that catalyses tryptophan to formylkynuren...
