Interpreting wind damage risk–how multifunctional forest management impacts standing timber at risk of wind felling

چکیده

Abstract Landscape multifunctionality, a widely accepted challenge for boreal forests, aims to simultaneously provide timber, non-timber ecosystem services, and shelter biodiversity. However, multifunctionality requires the use of novel forest management regimes optimally combined over landscape, an increased share sets asides. It remains unclear how this combination will shape stand vulnerability wind disturbances exposed timber volume. We growth simulations multi-objective optimization create alternative landscape level scenarios. Management choices were restricted 1) rotation forestry, 2) continuous cover 3) all allowed harvest intensity gradient from completely set aside landscapes maximal economic gain. Estimates stands’ structural environmental characteristics used predict damage probability. evaluated averaged wind-exposed standing volume changing structure under Intensive forestry reduced tree heights risk, but also multifunctionality. Conversely, maintained probability due taller trees higher thinning frequency. Overall, lowers total at any given time compared with forestry. Nevertheless, selective application contributes high gains increases heterogeneity. A approaches across provides efficient way reduce amount while increasing habitat vertebrate non-vertebrate species satisfying demands.

Application of Ant Colony Optimization for the Risk Management of Wind Damage in Forest Planning

Ant colony optimization (ACO) is still quite a new technique and seldom used in the field of forest planning compared to other heuristics such as simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. This work was aimed at evaluating the suitability of ACO for optimizing the clear-cut patterns of a forest landscape when aiming at simultaneously minimizing the risk of wind damage and maintaining sustainab...

Changes of Forest Stands Vulnerability to Future Wind Damage Resulting from Different Management Methods

The structure of forests stands changes continuously as a result of forest growth and both natural and anthropogenic disturbances like windthrow or management activities – planting/cutting of trees. These structure changes can stabilize or destabilize forest stands in terms of their resistance to wind damage. The driving force behind the damage is the climate, but the magnitude and sign of resu...

Wind Derivatives: Hedging Wind Risk Msc Thesis Applied Mathematics " Wind Derivatives: Hedging Wind Risk "

Preface Over the last 11 months, I have done research in the field of wind derivatives for my MSc thesis. I performed this research in close cooperation with Mercurious, and my professor Kees Oosterlee. In October 2012 the MSc thesis project was born at CWI in Amsterdam. That day I met with Kees Oosterlee and Jerry de Leeuw (managing director of Mercurious). Mercurious had spotted the opportuni...

MAPPING THE RISK OF FOREST WIND DAMAGE USING AIRBORNE SCANNING LiDAR

Wind damage is known for causing threats to sustainable forest management and yield value in boreal forests. Information about wind damage risk can aid forest managers in understanding and possibly mitigating damage impacts. The objective of this research was to better understand and quantify drivers of wind damage, and to map the probability of wind damage. To accomplish this, we used open-acc...
