The NIST Primary Radon-222 Measurement System

Within the United States, the national standard for radon measurements is embodied in a primary radon measurement system that has been maintained for over 50 years to accurately measure radon (222Rn) against international and national radium (226Ra) standards. In turn, all of the radon measurements made at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the radon transfer calibrat...

Distribution of airborne radon-222 concentrations in U.S. homes.

Apparently large exposures of the general public to the radioactive decay products of radon-222 present in indoor air have led to systematical appraisal of monitoring data from U.S. single-family homes; several ways of aggregating data were used that take into account differences in sample selection and season of measurements. The resulting distribution of annual-average radon-222 concentration...

Calibration of Scintillation Cells for Radon-222 Measurements at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Zinc sulfide coated scintillation cells are the primary method for measuring radon-222 at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Radiation Programs (ORP), Eastern Environmental Radiation Facility (EERF). These cells are used to measure concentrations of radon in exposure chambers that are used to calibrate or test other devices or instruments. Individual cells are calibrated ...

Estimating the dynamics of groundwater input into the coastal zone via continuous radon-222 measurements.

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the coastal zone has received increased attention in the last few years as it is now recognized that this process represents an important pathway for material transport. Assessing these material fluxes is difficult, as there is no simple means to gauge the water flux. To meet this challenge, we have explored the use of a continuous radon monitor to mea...

Calibration of Radon-222 Reference Instrument in Sweden

A simple procedure to calibrate and characterize a recently developed radon-222 reference instrument is described. The system, which is now used as the official national Swedish reference, is quick and easy to use. Systematic as well as random errors are smaller than in an earlier system and compare well with other systems, as has been shown in a number of international intercomparison measurem...
