Internal layers in turbulent free-shear flows

چکیده
In turbulent free-shear flows, layers of intense shear bound regions nearly uniform momentum. The thickness these scales as the Kolmogorov length scale and velocity across presents a jump approximately 10% characteristic large-scale flow. shear, rotation dominates, whereas in scalar gradient, strain is prevalent.

The Development of Free Turbulent Shear Layers
The development of a two-dimensional, free turbulent shear layer from an arbitrary initial velocity profile is analyzed theoretically. Included in the analysis are effects of both heat transfer and compressibility. The mean flow is described by approximate velocity profiles containing an unknown position parameter which is dependent upon the development length. Integral forms of the continuity ...
متن کاملCritical Layers in Shear Flows
The normal mode approach to investigating the stability of a parallel shear flow involves the superposition of a small wavelike perturbation on the basic flow. Its evolution in space and/or time is then determined. In the linear inviscid theory, if ū(y) is the basic velocity profile, then a singularity occurs at critical points yc, where ū = c, the perturbation phase speed. This is plausible in...
متن کاملOverview of turbulent shear flows
A brief review of basic concepts and folklore in shear turbulence. 1 Reynolds decomposition Experimental measurements show that turbulent flows can be decomposed into welldefined averages plus fluctuations, v = v̄ + v′. This is nicely illustrated in the Turbulence film available online at http://web.mit.edu/hml/ncfmf.html that was already mentioned in Lecture 1. In experiments, the average v̄ is ...
متن کاملBuoyant turbulent mixing in shear layers
Buoyancy effects in unstably stratified mixing layers express themselves through gravity currents of heavy fluid which propagate in an ambient lighter fluid. These currents are encountered in numerous geophysical flows, industrial safety and environmental protection issues [1] . During transition to turbulence a strong distortion of the separating interface between regions containing ‘heavy’ or...
متن کاملPolymer stress tensor in turbulent shear flows.
The interaction of polymers with turbulent shear flows is examined. We focus on the structure of the elastic stress tensor, which is proportional to the polymer conformation tensor. We examine this object in turbulent flows of increasing complexity. First is isotropic turbulence, then anisotropic (but homogenous) shear turbulence, and finally wall bounded turbulence. The main result of this pap...
