Intercalibration of the Plasma Density Measurements in Earth's Topside Ionosphere

چکیده
Over the last 20 years, a large number of instruments have provided plasma density measurements in Earth's topside ionosphere. To utilize all collected observations for empirical modeling, it is necessary to ensure that they do not exhibit systematic differences and are adjusted same reference frame. In this study, we compare satellite from Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE), Constellation Observing System Meteorology, Ionosphere, (COSMIC), CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP), Swarm, Communications/Navigation Outage Forecasting (C/NOFS) missions. Electron densities retrieved GRACE K-Band Ranging (KBR) system, previously shown be excellent agreement with incoherent scatter radar (ISR) measurements, used as reference. We find COSMIC radio occultation (RO) highly consistent GRACE-KBR showing mean relative difference <, therefore no calibration factors between them necessary. outstanding three-dimensional coverage ionosphere by mission perform conjunction analysis situ CHAMP, C/NOFS, Swarm CHAMP lower than ?. generally at daytime higher nighttime compared COSMIC. PLASMA TRANSPORT IN THE TOPSIDE VENUS IONOSPHERE R.w.scHuNK
Abeiraet-We have studied the extent to which certain transport processes affect ion composition and heat flow in the daytime, topside Venus ionosphere. Particular attention is given to the conditions that prevailed during the Mariner 5 measurements, at which time the topside Venus ionosphere appeared to be in a state of diffusive equilibrium. We have found that the ion composition is sensitive ...
متن کاملTurbulent Transport and Heating in the Auroral Plasma of the Topside Ionosphere
AIrstrati-Using plasma parameters from a typical stormtime ionospheric energy balance model, we have investigated the effects of plasma turbulence on the amoral magnetoplasma. The turbulence is assumed to be comprised of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves. These waves have been driven to a nonthermal level by a geomagnetic field-aligned, current-driven instability. The evolution of this instabil...
متن کاملSounding of the topside ionosphere/plasmasphere based on GPS measurements from CHAMP: Initial results
[1] Beside the GPS radio occultation measurements of the troposphere and ionosphere, the CHAMP satellite tracks presently up to 8 GPS satellites simultaneously for navigation. The received dual frequency GPS signals provide valuable information on the ionization state of the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere. This paper briefly describes a new developed model assisted technique to improve the...
متن کاملSimultaneous Measurements of O+ and H+ Temperatures in the Topside Ionosphere Over Arecibo
We have measured both proton (TH+ ) and oxygen ion (TO+ ) temperatures simultaneously from spectra obtained in the lower topside ionosphere using the Arecibo incoherent scatter radar (ISR). This is the first time that two ion temperatures and three ion compositions have been measured from the same IS spectrum, and, as far as we know, one of the first measurements of both ion temperatures in the...
متن کاملObservations of nightside auroral plasma upflows in the F-region and topside ionosphere
Observations from the special UK EISCAT program UFIS are presented. UFIS is a joint UHF-VHF experiment, designed to make simultaneous measurements of enhanced vertical plasma flows in the F-region and topside ionospheres. Three distinct intervals of upward ion flow were observed. During the first event, upward ion fluxes in excess of 1013 m~2 s~1 were detected, with vertical ion velocities reac...
