Interannual and Seasonal Along-Shelf Current Variability and Dynamics: Seventeen Years of Observations from the Southern New England Inner Shelf

چکیده

Abstract The characteristics and dynamics of depth-average along-shelf currents at monthly longer time scales are examined using 17 years observations from the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory on southern New England inner shelf. Monthly averages depth-averaged current almost always westward, with largest interannual variability in winter. There is a consistent annual cycle westward 5 cm s −1 summer decreasing to 1–2 Both predominantly driven by wind stress. In absence forcing, there flow ∼5 throughout year. At scales, momentum balance primarily between stress, surface gravity wave–enhanced bottom an opposing pressure gradient that sets up along shelf response wind. Surface wave enhancement stress substantial over essential accurately estimating variation across Significance Statement Seventeen continental reveal stronger than variations around opposed less 30 m water determining

Observations of near-inertial current variability on the New England shelf

[1] Observations from the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) moored array (deployed from August 1996 through June 1997) and supplemental moored observations are used to describe near-inertial current variability over the New England shelf. Near-inertial band current variance comprises 10–20% of the total observed current variance, and has episodic peak speeds exceeding 30 cm s . Near-inertial curr...

Phytoplankton scales of variability in the California Current System: 1. Interannual and cross-shelf variability

[1] In the California Current System, strong mesoscale variability associated with eddies and meanders of the coastal jet play an important role in the biological productivity of the area. To assess the dominant timescales of variability, a wavelet analysis is applied to almost nine years (October 1997 to July 2006) of 1-km-resolution, 5-day-averaged, Seaviewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWi...

Seasonal plankton dynamics along a cross-shelf gradient.

Much interest has recently been devoted to reconstructing the dynamic structure of ecological systems on the basis of time-series data. Using 10 years of monthly data on phyto- and zooplankton abundance from the Bay of Biscay (coastal to shelf-break sites), we demonstrate that the interaction between these two plankton components is approximately linear, whereas the effects of environmental fac...

Observations of Cross-Shelf Flow Driven by Cross-Shelf Winds on the Inner Continental Shelf

Six-yr-long time series of winds, waves, and water velocity from a cabled coastal observatory in 12 m of water reveal the separate dependence of the cross-shelf velocity profile on cross-shelf and along-shelf winds, waves, and tides. During small waves, cross-shelf wind is the dominant mechanism driving the cross-shelf circulation after tides and tidal residual motions are removed. The along-sh...

Seasonal and interannual variability of canopy transpiration of a hedgerow in southern England.

Transpiration from a hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna L.) dominated hedgerow in southern England was measured continuously over two growing seasons by the sap flow technique. Accompanying measurements of structural parameters, microclimate and leaf stomatal and boundary layer conductances were used to establish the driving factors of hedgerow transpiration. Observed transpiration rates, reaching pe...
