Host plant recognition by the root feeding clover weevil, Sitona lepidus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

This study investigated the ability of neonatal larvae of the root-feeding weevil, Sitona lepidus Gyllenhal, to locate white clover Trifolium repens L. (Fabaceae) roots growing in soil and to distinguish them from the roots of other species of clover and a co-occurring grass species. Choice experiments used a combination of invasive techniques and the novel technique of high resolution X-ray mi...

Division of peribacteroid membranes in root nodules of white clover.

Division of peribacteroid membranes in the cytoplasm of root nodules of white clover was found, from a study of serial thin sections prepared for electron microscopy, to accompany division of the bacteroids. It was also observed that the peribacteroid membranes appeared to have adhered to various sites on the surface of the bacteroid envelope outer membranes. Wherever peribacteroid membranes we...

Ultrastructure of Rhizobium-induced infection threads in clover root hairs.

Ultrastructural studies of Rhizobium-induced infection threads in clover root hairs show that the infection thread is initiated by an invagination process. Root hair wall growth is redirected at a localized point, resulting in the formation of an open pore. There is no direct penetration through the wall, and the bacteria remain extracellular within the root hair.

Ultrastructure of Rhizobium-Induced Infection Threads in Clover Root Hairs1

The first stage in the establishment of the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis is the infection of the root of the host legume by the appropriate Rhizobium species. A recent and complete review of the infection process has been given by Dart (1). In the clover symbiosis, infective strains of Rhizobium trifolii enter the host through root hairs. A characteristic deformation is curling at the root hair t...

Type and Distribution of Sensilla in the Antennae of the Red Clover Root Borer, Hylastinus obscurus

In order to determine the type, distribution, and structures of sensilla, the antennae of the red clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus Marsham (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), were examined by light and electron microscopy (both scanning and transmission). Four different types of sensilla were identified in the club, and one type of chaetica was found in the scape and funicle of both ...
