Intentional action and knowledge-centered theories of control

چکیده

Abstract Intentional action is, in some sense, non-accidental, and one common way theorists have attempted to explain this is with reference control. The idea, short, that intentional implicates control, control precludes accidentality. But virtue of what, exactly, would exercising over an suffice make it non-accidental whatever sense required for the be intentional? One interesting prima facie plausible idea we wish explore paper requiring knowledge —either knowledge-that or knowledge-how (e.g., Beddor Pavese 2021; cf., Setiya 2008; 2012 Habgood-Coote 2018). We review detail key recent work defending such knowledge-centric theories show none these accounts holds water. conclude discussion about how opposes sort luck excludes without doing so by (that- how).

Building Intentional Action Knowledge with One’s Hands

Understanding others' actions as intentional is fundamental to everyday social life. Adults view even the simplest and most concrete actions not as sheer movements, but rather as actions organized by intentions. To illustrate, observing a group of children and a ball traversing a soccer field, we perceive the motions of the former, but not the latter, as structured with respect to a goal, in th...

Deciding as Intentional Action: Control over Decisions

Common-sense folk psychology and mainstream philosophy of action agree about decisions: these are under an agent's direct control, and are thus intentional actions for which agents can be held responsible. I begin this paper by presenting a problem for this view. In short, since the content of the motivational attitudes that drive deliberation and decision remains open-ended until the moment of...

Nonconceptual Representations for Action and the Limits of Intentional Control

In this paper I argue that, to make intentional actions fully intelligible, we need to posit representations of action the content of which is nonconceptual. I further argue that an analysis of the properties of these nonconceptual representations, and of their relationships to action representations at higher levels, sheds light on the limits of intentional control. On the one hand, the capaci...

Knowledge Equivalence in Combined Action Theories

We investigate the relationship between two accounts of knowledge and action in the situation calculus: the Scherl and Levesque (SL) approach that models knowledge with possible worlds, and the Demolombe and Pozos Parra (DP) approach that models knowledge by a set of “knowledge fluents.” We construct combined action theories: basic action theories that encode a correspondence between an SL and ...
