Intellectual disability in higher education: Self-perceived training needs of university teachers

Introduction. The inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education is a fundamental right recognised by the legal system since its recognition United Nations Convention on Rights Persons Disabilities. However, measures adopted European countries to promote their incorporation are not always accompanied parallel training actions that provide university professors necessary knowledge incorporate people intellectual into classroom same guarantees and opportunities as without disabilities. Objective. This paper aims specific data self-perceived needs teaching staff thus lay foundations for programme. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out means survey designed collect teachers' perceptions own competences effectiveness knowledge, well importance they attached some aspects disability. administered teachers Serbia, Netherlands, Portugal, Italy Spain, total sample 1009 teachers. Results. results obtained showed perception competence educational skills dependent three main factors: previous training, experience personal experiences. Conclusion. present demonstrated concern need obtain education.
