Integration into regional or global value chains and economic upgrading prospects: an analysis of the East African Community (EAC) bloc

Abstract The aim of the study was to assess integration into regional or global value chains and economic upgrading prospects in East African Community (EAC) bloc. We conducted a comparative analysis participation chain (GVC) among EAC member states assessed determinants region using UNCTAD-Eora GVC Panel data from 2005 2018. results show that Kenya, Tanzania Uganda are relatively better integrated through two channels participation, namely foreign added (FVA) domestic added. However, for indirect-value channel, Kenya had highest score, rest lower mean scores. overall EAC’s still resides upstream low- middle-value-added production activities, which limits its competitiveness compared other regions. empirical positive significant effect credit, direct investment, quality institutions FVA on upgrading. but insignificant association with observed human capital GDP per capita. Infrastructure negatively significantly associated These suggest improving infrastructure connectivity further strengthening institutional governance would reduce trade costs promote greater investments, product service diversification, leading deeper region. At policy level, adoption effective national industrial policies innovation development, attract investment help address market coordination deficiencies
