Integrated weed management with reduced herbicides in a no‐till dairy rotation

چکیده
With more than 65% of agronomic crops under no-till in Pennsylvania, herbicides are relied on for weed management. To lessen the environmental impact and selection pressure herbicide resistance, we conducted a 9-yr experiment to test reduction practices dairy crop rotation at Rock Springs, PA. The included soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]–corn (Zea mays L.)–3-yr alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)–canola (Brassica napus L.). following were used reduce inputs: (a) banding residual over corn rows using high-residue inter-row cultivation; (b) seeding small grain companion with alfalfa; (c) plowing once 6 yr terminate perennial forage. These compared standard herbicide-based management (SH) continuous no-till. We hypothesized: There would be biomass reduced treatment (RH), leading weeds RH time, but added not affect yield (d) or differences net return. sampled soybean, corn, first two forage years. In was often greater SH increased years treatments. forage, did always differ between Yield return similar most Results suggest that inputs supplemented an integrated approach can effective may lead time.

True integrated weed management
Using the simplest of definitions, integrated weed management has been described as “putting components [of weed control] together, not taking them apart.” Yet, weed science has stopped at the “field edge” in assembling the components into a truly integrated approach. What is keeping weed scientists from developing real integrated weed control regardless of space and time? The answer to this qu...

tion and fertilization rates create a favorable environment for weed growth in addition to crop growth. Weeds can quickly out-compete the crop for light and other resources, reducing the rate and amount of crop growth as well as salability (Berchielli-Robertson et al., 1990; Norcini and Stamps, 1992). Weed management in nursery production is most effectively achieved by preventative practices, ...
