Instructional leadership in sub-Saharan Africa: policy and practice

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to report findings a synthesis literature reviews and stakeholder interviews conducted in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia Zimbabwe. provides an overview instructional leadership policy practice these six countries. Design/methodology/approach This reports systematic review, participant interviews, sub-Sahara African research links British Council's initiative develop developing contexts, including countries featured this submission. Findings show diverse contexts. Three have no explicit policies on important construct, while others relevant statements but limited evidence practice. Research limitations/implications countries, more school-based required grounded whether how practiced. pandemic inhibited such 2020. study emerging impact school student outcomes, confirming what known from international research. Practical implications Developing awareness can improve learning, linked appropriate training, could lead effective schools.
