Inhomogeneity of Macroseismic Intensities in Italy and Consequences for Macroseismic Magnitude Estimation

چکیده

Abstract We show that macroseismic intensities assessed in Italy the last decade are not homogeneous with those of previous periods. This is partly related to recent adoption European Macroseismic Scale (EMS) place Mercalli–Cancani–Sieberg (MCS) scale used up about one ago. The underestimation EMS respect MCS a half degree on average and, even more significant, if estimated according approach developed for quick evaluations damage by seismologists Italian Department Civil Protection. also inhomogeneity over time differences between instrumental and magnitudes computed from intensity data, indicating an overestimation 0.3 units ones before year 1960 0.2 after such date. consistent studies hypothesized incorrect calibration mechanical recording seismometers operating surrounding countries introduction standard electromagnetic beginning 1960s. For reasons, preinstrumental earthquakes Catalogo Parametrico dei Terremoti Italiani seismic catalog, most hazard assessment Italy, might be overestimated, average, 0.1–0.2 magnitude units.

Reevaluation of the Macroseismic Effects of the 1887 Sonora, Mexico Earthquake and its Magnitude Estimation

The Sonora, Mexico, earthquake of 3 May 1887 occurred a few years before the start of the instrumental era in seismology. We revisit all available accounts of the earthquake and assign Modified Mercalli Intensities (MMI), interpreting and analyzing macroseismic information using the best available modern methods. We find that earlier intensity assignments for this important earthquake were unju...

Geostatistics in Historical Macroseismic Data Analysis

This paper follows a geostatistical approach for the evaluation, modelling and visualization of the possible local interactions between natural components and built-up elements in seismic risk analysis. This method, applied to old town centre of Potenza hilltop town, offers a new point of view for civil protection planning using kernel density and autocorrelation indexes maps to analyse macrose...

A Macroseismic Method for the Vulnerability Assessment of Buildings

A seismic risk analysis addressed to earthquake emergency management and protection strategies planning, requires territorial scale evaluation; to this aim a macroseismic method for the vulnerability assessment of built-up area is presented. The method is derived, in a conceptually rigorous way, by the use of Probability and of Fuzzy Set Theory, considering Macroseismic Scale definitions. Damag...

Assessing Macroseismic Data Reliability through Rough Set Theory: The Case of Rapolla (Basilicata, Southern Italy)

This paper deals with the analysis of the reliability of information concerning damages caused to buildings by earthquakes. This research was started after analyzing a huge amount of written sources drawn up after 1930 Irpinia (southern Italy) earthquake. The analysis led to delineate damage ‘scenarios’, useful in trying to mitigate seismic risk for most affected towns. Once analyzed the effect...

Macroseismic Intensity Modelling of Earthquakes in Southern Spain: Attenuation and Tectonic Implications

A modelling of the observed macroseismic intensity of historical and instrumental earthquakes in southern Spain is proposed, with the aim of determining the macroseismic parameters for seismic hazard evaluation in a region in which the characterization of intensity distribution of seismic events shows different levels of difficulty referable to the complex faults system of the area in study. Th...
