Influence of Salinity on Copper Toxicity in Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula Embryos

چکیده
The sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula have a key role in benthic dynamics they are often used to assess the toxicity of environmental contaminants. aim this research was investigate influence salinity on copper P. A. embryos, evaluating impact future ocean variations estimating an optimum range for embryos. For purpose, urchin embryos were exposed different concentrations under varying regimes, toxic effects with percentage abnormal Integrative Toxicity Index (ITI). Results revealed acceptable levels anomalies 33–36‰ 33–39‰ lividus. effect (EC50) reveals increasing at both species, but between (A. lixula) 36–39‰ (P. lividus) appear inversely related salinity. This study illustrates difficulty relating biological response bioavailability, because uptake sensitivity across salinities is influenced by differences osmoregulation, enhancing our knowledge about optimal ranges potential climate change embryo development.

Grazing by the sea urchins Arbacia lixula L. and Paracentrotus lividus Lam. in the Northwest Mediterranean
The sea urchins Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus are common on shallow subtidal reefs in the Mediterranean. Previous studies on the ecology of these species reported that P. lividus is generally more abundant on horizontal or gently sloping substrata, where it forages mainly on erect algae. In contrast, A. lixula is more common on vertical substrata and it is considered a main grazer of...
متن کاملPrimary Screening of the Bioactivity of Brackishwater Cyanobacteria: Toxicity of Crude Extracts to Artemia salina Larvae and Paracentrotus lividus Embryos
Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of Gram-negative bacteria that produce an array of secondary compounds with selective bioactivity against vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, microalgae, fungi, bacteria, viruses and cell lines. The aim of this study was to assess the toxic effects of aqueous, methanolic and hexane crude extracts of benthic and picoplanktonic cyanobacteria isolated from estuari...
متن کاملNew insights into negative effects of lithium on sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus embryos
The diffuse use of lithium in a number of industrial processes has produced a significant contamination of groundwater and surface water with it. The increased use of lithium has generated only scarce studies on its concentrations in ambient waters and on its effects on aquatic organisms. Only few contributions have focused on the toxicity of lithium in marine organisms (such as marine animals,...
متن کاملTeratogenic Effects of Diatom Metabolites on Sea Urchin Paracentrotus lividus Embryos
The diatom-derived polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs), 2-trans,4-trans-decadienal, 2-trans,4-trans-octadienal, 2-trans,4-trans,7-octatrienal, 2-trans,4-trans-heptadienal, as well as tridecanal were tested on early and later larval development in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. We also tested the effect of some of the more abundant diatom polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on development, i...

Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus are the dominant sea urchins in 14 the Mediterranean sublittoral, where they are key structuring species due to their 15 grazing activity. It has been commonly accepted that competition between both species 16 is minimized by specializing in different algal foods: A. lixula is considered to feed 17 mainly on encrusting coralline algae, while P. lividus p...
