Influence of Heat Treatment Parameters on the Carbide Morphology of PM High‐Speed Steel HS 6‐5‐3‐8

The influence of heat treatment parameters on the carbide morphology powder metallurgic high-speed steel HS 6-5-3-8 is examined. To that end, diverse are selected and applied by quenching dilatometry. In particular, different austenitizing temperatures, as well an isothermal holding stage during in temperature regime transformation gap at temperatures between 450 600 °C, produced. Extensive computer-aided image analysis performed to investigate morphology. It found circularity tungsten-rich M6C carbides increases significantly after short times a 550 °C due precipitation from metastable supersaturated austenite onto pre-existing carbides. Longer lead further growth carbides, while does not change. shown hardness isothermally treated material increased, all other being equal. Increased might be helpful for increasing toughness reaching same wear resistance conventional heat-treated material. Moreover, it possible enhance with regain positive properties stage. Thus, improved could achieved.
