Inferring time-dependent calving dynamics at Helheim Glacier

چکیده
Abstract We perform Bayesian inference of the parameters a time-dependent model ice flow and calving at Helheim Glacier, East Greenland. find that, while time-independent parameterization can recover mean observed terminus position, such is unable to sub-annual variability, even when forced with seasonally varying climate. To address this, we develop simple stochastic relating surface runoff rates threshold. Again inferring from observations, that this able reproduce observations respect both position characteristic temporal variability. This result demonstrates importance considering potential controls on in numerical models, which may include variable undercutting or runoff-dependent crevasse propagation.

Dynamics of glacier calving at the ungrounded margin of Helheim Glacier, southeast Greenland
During summer 2013 we installed a network of 19 GPS nodes at the ungrounded margin of Helheim Glacier in southeast Greenland together with three cameras to study iceberg calving mechanisms. The network collected data at rates up to every 7 s and was designed to be robust to loss of nodes as the glacier calved. Data collection covered 55 days, and many nodes survived in locations right at the gl...
متن کاملStep-Wise Changes in Glacier Flow Speed Coincide With Calving and Glacial Earthquakes at Helheim Glacier, Greenland
[1] Geodetic observations show several large, sudden increases in flow speed at Helheim Glacier, one of Greenland’s largest outlet glaciers, during summer, 2007. These step-like accelerations, detected along the length of the glacier, coincide with teleseismically detected glacial earthquakes and major iceberg calving events. No coseismic offset in the position of the glacier surface is observe...
متن کاملImpact of fjord dynamics and glacial runoff on the circulation near Helheim Glacier
Submarine melting is an important contributor to the mass balance of tidewater glaciers in Greenland, and has been suggested as a trigger for their widespread acceleration. Our understanding of this process is limited, however. It generally relies on the simplified model of subglacial discharge in a homogeneous ocean, where the melting circulation consists of an entraining, buoyant plume at the...
متن کاملTidally driven ice speed variation at Helheim Glacier, Greenland, observed with terrestrial radar interferometry
We used a terrestrial radar interferometer (TRI) at Helheim Glacier, Greenland, in August 2013, to study the effects of tidal forcing on the terminal zone of this tidewater glacier. During our study period, the glacier velocity was up to 25md. Our measurements show that the glacier moves out of phase with the semi-diurnal tides and the densely packed melange in the fjord. Here detrended glacier...
متن کاملRapid retreat and acceleration of Helheim Glacier, east Greenland
[1] A significant amount of the measured coastal thinning of the Greenland ice sheet may be due to recent acceleration of outlet glaciers. Using remote sensing, we measured two major periods of speedup on Helheim Glacier between 2000 and 2005 that increased peak speeds from approximately 8 to 11 km/yr. These speedups coincided with rapid retreats of the calving front, totaling over 7.5 km. The ...
