Infectious and Non-infectious Factors Affecting Somatic Cell Count and New Diagnostic Approaches of Intramammary Infections in Dairy Goats: A Review

Background: Intramammary infections constitute a major animal health and economic problem in commercial dairy goat farms, being responsible for decreases milk yield, alter composition, lower quality. Objectives: This paper reviews the published literature during last three decades, highlighting multiplicity of non-infectious infectious factors that influence somatic cells count (SCC). Besides that, it intends to contributes understand conventional diagnostic methods its limitations, supports implementation new technologies an efficient mastitis control, including use infrared thermography ultrasonography. Methods: A search on Medline, ScienceDirect University Institutional Repositories databases was performed using “goats AND OR intramammary count” publications from 1990 present (2020). Results: total 144 were selected. The SCC is most important criteria evaluate inflammatory status mammary glands goats, but several (e.g., phenotypic, reproductive, lactational factors) should be taken consideration interpretation.
