Inequality through MNE–emerging economy coevolution? A political actor view on Myanmar/Burma’s peacebuilding

Purpose This study aims to understand how the coevolution of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and emerging economy institutions affects social economic (in)equality in an ambiguous, context from a political actor perspective. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative nature, builds on conversations with 20 actors involved peacebuilding process Myanmar/Burma. It analyzes their perceptions interaction MNEs host constructionist viewpoint. Findings The identifies four patterns which portray evolving between MNE activities different elements institutional environment as well consequences for (in)equality. Originality/value contributes critical international business research economies by emphasizing partly conflicting various stakeholder groups environments. more nuanced conceptualization complex enables analysis inequality direct indirect outcome MNE–institution interaction. Thus, connects human rights discussion provides insight into MNEs’ adoption standards.
