Indigenous weather forecasting among Gujii pastoralists in southern Ethiopia: Towards monitoring drought

Abstract Indigenous weather forecasting (IWF) is practised by various communities around the world. Access to meteorological limited in eastern Africa’s pastoral regions. As a result, pastoralists frequently rely on indigenous indicators. This paper investigates use of IWF drought among Gujii southern Ethiopia. To collect data, household surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews were used. Furthermore, data used determine frequency events area. A comparison was made between from Ethiopian National Metrological Service Agency ensure consistency results climatic data. For quantitative analysis, descriptive statistics used, while hermeneutic narrative analyses for qualitative analysis. Pastoralists have variety indicators, such as reading livestock intestines, observing animal insect behaviours, interpreting star moon alignment. Both event result history agency indicate presence However, several internal external factors are contributing IWF’s gradual decline. Religious teachings, technology, education identified factors, growing generation gap an factor. Thus, increase accuracy improve pastoralist’s prediction capacity, integration this knowledge highly appreciated.
