Indices of Pacific Walker Circulation Strength

چکیده
The Pacific Walker circulation (PWC) significantly affects the global weather patterns, distribution of mean precipitation, and modulates rate warming. In this study, we review compare 10 different indices measuring strength PWC using data from ERA5 reanalyses for period 1951–2020. We propose a revised velocity potential index, while also discuss two streamfunction indices. show that normalized largely agree on annual-mean PWC, with highest correlations observed between measure closely linked physical processes. tend to disagree most during periods strong El Niño. Therefore, trends in vary depending chosen time frame. While 1981–2010 strengthening, 1951–2020 are mostly neutral, recent (2000–2020) (insignificant) weakening PWC. results hint at multidecadal variability approximately 35 years, which would result continued coming decade.

The Zonal Walker Circulation
In addition to the mean meridional Hadley circulation, there also exist zonal overturning circulations that contribute to the meteorology and climatology of the tropics. Together, these overturning circulations are commonly referred to as the Walker circulation. In this section, we first explore the history and basic structure of the Walker circulation. Later, we reintroduce the shallow water e...

متن کاملRecent multidecadal strengthening of the Walker circulation across the tropical Pacific
The Pacific Walker circulation is a large overturning cell that spans the tropical Pacific Ocean, characterized by rising motion (lower sea-level pressure) over Indonesia and sinking motion (higher sea level-pressure) over the eastern Pacific1,2. Fluctuations in the Walker circulation reflect changes in the location and strength of tropical heating, so related circulation anomalies have global ...
متن کاملSouth China Sea hydrological changes and Pacific Walker Circulation variations over the last millennium
The relative importance of north-south migrations of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) versus El Niño-Southern Oscillation and its associated Pacific Walker Circulation (PWC) variability for past hydrological change in the western tropical Pacific is unclear. Here we show that north-south ITCZ migration was not the only mechanism of tropical Pacific hydrologic variability during the las...
