Indentation size effect in exceptionally hard AlCu thin films

• Exceptionally hard Al-Cu thin films. Close correlation between the microstructure and occurrence of size effect. Unexpected absence effect phenomenon in fine-grained materials. Size strongly precipitated Dual DC magnetron sputtered AlCu films representing whole composition range were investigated by depth-sensing indentation (DSI), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) atomic force (AFM). Experimental results show exceptionally high hardness ? 16 GPa middle concentration 40-70 at% Cu. Indentation tests also revealed phenomena related to size-effect. At Al or Cu contents below 20 at%, well-known was not observed, which can be interpreted grain boundary sliding deformation mechanism In composition, clearly observed even against fine structure. This is a consequence highly these films, leads processes taking place manner more characteristic amorphous
