Increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in cultures of nervous cells treated with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor

Introduction. The effects of antidepressants such as fluoxetine on brain plasticity are associated with increased transcription and signaling trophic factors brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which enhances synaptic neurogenic processes. Objective. To evaluate whether treatment could increase BDNF levels in retinal cells. Method. conduct the experiment, retinas were dissected from neonatal rats cultured complete culture medium. Next, cultures designated for experimental group treated 1µM maintained 2, 12, 24, 48, or 72 hours vitro. control underwent same protocol, but did not receive treatment. determined by Western blot analysis, data analyzed Student's t-test to compare two groups (control experimental). Results. results showed that 48 had significantly higher than group. Conclusion. findings suggest may have potential therapeutic cells increasing levels. This adds existing evidence role mediating highlights further research use diseases.
