چکیده
The entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium acridum in oil-based formulations (Green Muscle ® (GM)) is a biopesticide for locust control lacking side-effects on biodiversity, unlike chemical insecticides. Under controlled conditions, GM-treated locusts and grasshoppers attract predators, complementary advantage control. We assessed avian predation population of desert northern Niger aerially sprayed operationally with GM 107 g viable conidia ha -1 . Populations adult birds vegetation greenness were simultaneously along two transects from 12 days before until 23 after treatment. Common kestrels Falco tinnunculus lanners F biarmicus the predominant predators. Regurgitated pellets prey remains collected daily beneath “plucking posts” kestrels. Locusts started dying five post-spray had its maximum effect one-two weeks spray, 80% efficacy at day 21. After spraying, bird numbers increased significantly ( P <0.05) concurrent decreasing densities. Locust decreased <0.001) both time since spraying greenness. Before kestrel food under plucking posts accounted 34.3 ±13.4 items , which 31.0 ±11.9 (90.3%), reducing to 21.1 ±7.3 which19.5 ±6.7 (92.5%), attributable use plucking-posts by rather than an spray. took more larger female (75–80%) smaller male (20–25%) locusts. Avian probably enhanced impact population, especially removing large females. No direct or indirect adverse observed non-target organisms including predators such as ants birds. These substantial ecological advantages should also be considered when choosing between conventional biopesticide-based

Adult survival, maturation, and reproduction of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria infected with the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var acridum.
Studies were conducted with two different doses of Metarhizium anisopliae var acridum to examine the effects on survival and reproductive potential of adult Schistocerca gregaria under conditions that either limited thermoregulation or enabled optimal thermoregulation. Adult S. gregaria infected with the fungal pathogen showed either a rapid and high mortality at relatively constant temperature...

متن کاملIncreased muscular volume and cuticular specialisations enhance jump velocity in solitarious compared with gregarious desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria.
The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, shows a strong phenotypic plasticity. It can develop, depending upon population density, into either a solitarious or gregarious phase that differs in many aspects of behaviour, physiology and morphology. Prominent amongst these differences is that solitarious locusts have proportionately longer hind femora than gregarious locusts. The hind femora conta...

The effects of relative humidity (RH) and temperature on the sporulation of Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum on mycosed cadavers of desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, were assessed in the laboratory. Quantitative assessments of conidial production over 10 days under constant conditions showed that sporulation was optimized at RH > 96% and at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees C. Under...
متن کاملAcid phosphatases in the haemolymph of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, infected with the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae.
A comparison has been made between the effects of wounding, chemical stimulation of the immune system and fungal infection on acid phosphatase (AcP) activity in the haemolymph of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. Untreated control locusts had constitutive levels of AcP. As a lysosomal enzyme, AcP may have a role in autophagy and cell turn over as well as defence. Injection of saline and...
