Incorporating Field Experience into International Agricultural Development Programs

Some graduate education programs support experiential learning but do not require practical experiences for students specializing in international agriculture development. We examined U.S. land grant university agricultural program descriptions requirements and found them lacking. The literature surrounding volunteerism is reviewed examples are described. International can fill the experience gap future development professionals studying at institutions. Graduate acquire field through short- or long-term volunteer assignments, such as those USAID Farmer-to-Farmer build their capacities by providing technical assistance whereas host country participants enhance knowledge, skills, abilities to expand increase sector productivity. Short-term assignments help gain experience, improve interpersonal cultural competencies. Host communities volunteers alike benefit engaging intercultural exchanges that promote increased understanding of differing societies worldwide.
