چکیده
The framework of ecosystem services (ES) and disservices (ED) has increasingly been used in various science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) disciplines, including soil science. objectives this study were to use ES/ED concepts extend test an existing lecture laboratory exercise on organic carbon (SOC) online introductory science course (FNR 2040: Soil Information Systems) taught Clemson University students from STEM disciplines (forestry, wildlife biology, environmental natural resources) Fall 2020. was extended with a series reusable learning objects (RLOs), which are self-contained digital modules commonly utilized e-learning. consisted identifying ES calculating the avoided social cost (SC-CO2) stocks assigned soil’s topsoil horizon. effectively increased student familiarity as indicated by post-assessment survey +24.4% increase moderately familiar category +36.1% extremely category. graded quiz ten questions taken 51 average score 8.7 (out 10). The challenges of incorporating cultural ecosystem services into environmental assessment.
The ecosystem services concept is used to make explicit the diverse benefits ecosystems provide to people, with the goal of improving assessment and, ultimately, decision-making. Alongside material benefits such as natural resources (e.g., clean water, timber), this concept includes-through the 'cultural' category of ecosystem services-diverse non-material benefits that people obtain through in...
متن کاملIncorporating Nanotechnology into Undergraduate Education
A new course in nanoscale mechanics for engineering students was recently taught at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Mechanics enters a new regime at the nanoscale, where the effects of surfaces, interfaces, defects, material property variations, and quantum effects are accentuated. This course provided an introduction to nanoscale engineering with a direct focus on the critical role that m...
متن کاملProposal for Increasing Consistency When Incorporating Ecosystem Services into Decision Making
After decades of research and demonstration, use of ecosystem services in decision making is being translated into policy guidance for practitioners.1 In October 2015, the U.S. Executive Offices of the President—the Office of Management and Budget, the Council on Environmental Quality, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy—released a memo “Incorporating Ecosystem Services into Federal...
