Incomplete Exhalation during Resuscitation—Theoretical Review and Examples from Ventilation of Newborn Term Infants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: Newborn resuscitation guidelines recommend positive pressure ventilation (PPV) for newborns who do not establish effective spontaneous breathing after birth. T-piece resuscitator systems are commonly used in high-resource settings and can additionally provide end-expiratory (PEEP). Short expiratory time, high resistance, rapid dynamic changes lung compliance large tidal volumes increase the possibility of incomplete exhalation. Previous publications indicate that this may occur during newborn resuscitation. Our aim was to study examples exhalations term discuss these against theoretical background. Methods: Examples flow data from respiratory function monitors (RFM) were selected 129 received PPV using a resuscitator. RFM presented user Results: exhalation with higher-than-set PEEP-levels present recordings visual correlation factors affecting time needed complete Conclusions: Incomplete relationship constants have been well described theoretically. We documented increased newborns. conclude resuscitations be reviewed purpose should further explored, as clinical benefit or risk harm known.

متن کاملWeaning newborn infants from mechanical ventilation
Invasive mechanical ventilation is a life-saving procedure which is largely used in neonatal intensive care units, particularly in very premature newborn infants. However, this essential treatment may increase mortality and cause substantial morbidity, including lung or airway injuries, unplanned extubations, adverse hemodynamic effects, analgosedative dependency and severe infectious complicat...
متن کاملCord Blood Lipid Profile in Premature, Near-Term and Term Newborn Infants
Introduction: The fetus needs a considerable amount of cholesterol for the development of tissues and organs. Studies have suggested that genetic and environmental factors influence the composition of cord blood lipoproteins. In this study, we aim to assess the effect of gestational age, sex and birth weight on the cord blood lipoproteins. Methods: We collected umbilical cord blood samples fr...
متن کاملCombined oscillatory and mandatory ventilation in newborn infants
When intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV) and/or high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) fails to improve respiratory failure, the imposition of HFOV during IMV has been shown to facilitate alveolar recruitment and improve oxygenation. This mode of ventilation has been referred to as combined oscillatory and mandatory ventilation (COMV) or high frequency oscillation-intermittent venti...
متن کاملPositive pressure ventilation and cranial volume in newborn infants.
The relationship between changes in airways pressure, pleural pressure, and cranial volume was studied in a group of sick newborn infants requiring ventilatory assistance. Cranial volume increased appreciably only when lung compliance was such that more than 20% of the applied airways pressure was transmitted to the pleural space, or if the absolute pleural pressure was greater than 4 cmH2O abo...
