Income diversification and household welfare in Uganda 1992–2012

We use five waves of household surveys in Uganda, from 1992/3 to 2011/12, study income diversification and its effect on the welfare rural urban households during a period sustained economic growth poverty reduction, comparing 1990s 2000s, disaggregating by gender head. Diversification is measured terms access incomes agriculture (farming), agricultural wage, self-employment (informal), wage employment remittances. The analysis shows substantial evolving variation effects across rural/urban locations became increasingly beneficial for over time areas, particularly male headed households, but not female that diversified into employment. was also important livelihoods with large differences likely reflecting differentials returns non-agricultural Remittances were associated increasing 2000s all although proportion receiving remittances has been declining.
