Including soil alters the optimization of forestry with carbon sinks

چکیده
We integrate a carbon net sink and stand-level wood production to analyze their simultaneous optimization as an economic problem. Carbon is included in living trees, products, forest soil. Forestry specified by size-structured model for optimizing thinning timing intensity, rotation period, the optimal choice of versus continuous cover forestry. The inclusion increases pool mainly trees soil, while effect on product remains minor. With 3% interest rate, increasing CO 2 price €40 per tCO total steady-state 131% soil accounts ca. 60% increased storage. Omitting carbon, previous studies, leads underestimates sink, significantly decreasing achievable gain from joint management. suggests that, contrast results, higher does not necessarily favor

An Optimization Model of Carbon Sinks in CDM Forestry Projects Based on Interval Linear Programming
This study describes the first general optimization model for complex systems with uncertain parameters and decision variables represented as intervals in CDM forestry projects. We work through a specific example of the optimization method developed for a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) forestry project in Inner Mongolia, China. This model is designed to optimize the carbon sink capacity of t...
متن کاملThe Economics of Including Carbon Sinks in Climate Change Policy
After the inclusion of carbon sinks in the Kyoto Protocol, greenhouse gas mitigation policies account for abatement measurements in both the energy and forestry sectors. This report deals with the development of a methodology for estimating cost-curves of carbon sequestration from afforestation activities and its combination with existing cost-curves of carbon abatement in the energy sector, wi...
متن کاملElevated carbon dioxide alters the structure of soil microbial communities.
Pyrosequencing analysis of 16S rRNA genes was used to examine impacts of elevated CO(2) (eCO(2)) on soil microbial communities from 12 replicates each from ambient CO(2) (aCO(2)) and eCO(2) settings. The results suggest that the soil microbial community composition and structure significantly altered under conditions of eCO(2), which was closely associated with soil and plant properties.
