Impacts of climatic and atmospheric changes on carbon dynamics in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
We used the Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model (DLEM) to estimate carbon (C) storage and to analyze the impacts of environmental changes on C dynamics from 1971 to 2001 in Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GRSM). Our simulation results indicate that forests in GRSM have a C density as high as 15.9kgm(-2), about twice the regional average. Total carbon storage in GRSM in 2001 was 62.2Tg (T=10(12)), ...
متن کاملA Multivariate Analysis of Forest Communities in the Western Great Smoky Mountains National Park
An integrated sequence of multivariate techniques was applied to the vegetation of the western Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Included in the sequence were hierarchial classification, detrended correspondence analysis and multiple discriminant analysis. Based on the importance of landform in previous research, a system of topographical quantification was developed and also used in the cla...
متن کاملRarity and Diversity in Forest Ant Assemblages of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
We report on a systematic survey of the ant fauna occurring in hardwood forests in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At 22-mixed hardwood sites, we collected leaf-litter ant species using Winkler samplers. At eight of those sites, we also collected ants using pitfall and Malaise traps. In total, we collected 53 ant species. As shown in other studies, ant species richness tended to declin...
متن کاملBiodiversity and Scale: Determinants of Species Richness in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
There is a great need for simple yet flexible and biologically meaningful ways of classifying landscapes using readily available data for the purposes of inventorying and monitoring biodiversity. In this paper we describe a strategy developed for the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (NC and TN, USA) that establishes an objective and iterative approac...
متن کاملVariation in seed dispersal along an elevational gradient in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Seed dispersal by ants is ecologically important and geographically widespread as 20–50% of all herbaceous species in eastern deciduous forests are dispersed by ants, but we know little about how or why such interactions vary geographically. In this paper, we examined variation in seed dispersal by ants along an extensive elevational gradient (256–2025 m) in the Great Smoky Mountains National P...
